Intern Spotlight: Lizbeth Gonzalez

Why did you want to do a second internship with B&A?

I chose to return to Bulley & Andrews (B&A) for a second year because I saw it as an opportunity to “level up.” Instead of starting fresh somewhere else, I wanted to deepen my connection with B&A and continue growing from where I left off, not reset back to square one. Some might wonder if there’s more to learn as an intern after a year, but there absolutely was. Returning gave me the opportunity to take on entirely new challenges while still building on last year’s experiences. Coming back allowed me to reference what I already knew and keep pushing myself forward, of course, with the help of my mentor.

What was your favorite project to assist with and why?

I’ve genuinely enjoyed working on every project I’ve been a part of, especially because of the amazing people I’ve encountered. Whether it’s been the education, institutional, or healthcare division, each type of project has been eye-opening and taught me how unique every division at B&A is. I specifically love projects that don’t have a clear pathway, as those were the projects where I’ve learned the most by watching the B&A team problem solve, of course, that is subject to change once I enter the field.

Working in the healthcare division, I’ve found it to be something special, too. While you’re not directly caring for patients, you’re contributing to spaces that support their care, spaces that actually affect people’s well-being, which has been my preferred division to be a part of.

One thing you learned that surprised you?

One surprising lesson at B&A has been how vital communication is and the many forms it takes. Whether face-to-face, by email, or on the phone, every interaction matters. Building strong relationships is essential in construction because you never know when you’ll collaborate with someone again, so clear communication is always essential. Equally important is following up in writing to create a record and ensure what you need arrives when it should. Observing these practices has helped me refine my own communication skills.

What is your favorite memory from your internship?

My favorite memory from my internship is connecting with other driven young adults, as well as the dedicated team here at B&A . Hearing everyone’s goals and pathways has genuinely been inspiring. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know the B&A team, such as my mentor, superintendents, safety crew, and everyone around the office. Listening to their stories and learning how our unique paths all led us here reminded me that we each have our own journeys, yet our paths have crossed, showing there are many different ways for one to achieve their goals. What matters most is carving your own path and sharing your story.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a future intern?

If there’s one tip I’d pass on to future interns, it’s to say hi to everyone. You never know whose path you’ll cross again. I’ll admit, I’m shy at first, and greeting everyone wasn’t easy, but I’ve definitely gotten better. Even a simple “good morning” or “hello,” I’ve come to learn, can make a difference. If you want to go the extra mile, during your downtime, reach out to other divisions and meet different members of the B&A team and build connections.

What is your #1 takeaway from this experience?

The experience doesn’t make you, you make the experience.” This mantra has guided me through every opportunity I have received in life. Having great opportunities is one thing, but making the most out of them is another. If you don’t actively engage, ask questions, and build connections, those opportunities can slip away unnoticed. I strongly believe that what you put in is what you get out; for that reason, it’s crucial to invest in yourself, whether it’s through learning, networking, or embracing new challenges. Each experience is a chance to grow, and it’s up to you to seize it, which is something I have been reminded of here at B&A as I have made sure to make this opportunity my own this summer.
