B&A Awarded Chicago Building Congress Merit Award for S&C Electric Advanced Technology Center

Chicago, Ill. (June 16, 2010) –S&C Electric Company’s new Advanced Technology Center has been recognized by the Chicago Building Congress (CBC) as the 2010 Merit Award winner in the industrial category.  Bulley & Andrews, LLC served as general contractor for the construction of the $25 million project that was completed in November 2009.

The Chicago Building Congress Merit Awards recognize the most outstanding construction projects from the past three years within the Metropolitan Chicago Area.  The Advanced Technology Center topped other projects within the category, including the City of Naperville Public Works Service Center and The University of Chicago Hospital’s 61st and Drexel Parking and Office Structure.  The award was presented on May 19 at the CBC's 56th annual awards banquet held at the Union League Club of Chicago.

"S&C Electric has been a valued client of Bulley & Andrews since the early 1970’s; we were proud to have provided construction services for this innovative project," said Paul Hellermann, president and chief operating officer of Bulley & Andrews. “After nearly 40 years of working together, it was especially exciting to see our collaborative efforts recognized.”

The Advanced Technology Center (ATC), designed by A. C. Alexander Engineers, Architects, LTD, is one of the largest high power test facilities in the United States.  The facility will enable S&C to accelerate development and delivery of innovative electrical switching and protection products in the United States, including the highly sophisticated automatic service restoration, energy storage and power quality equipment needed for the Smart Grid.  Additionally, the combined testing and manufacturing facility will add a number of jobs to the Chicago area.

The ATC is one of the most environmentally-friendly facilities of its kind in the world. The project is on track to obtain a LEED Gold Certification rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.  It will be one of the first industrial buildings in the Chicago metropolitan area to hold such a rating. The 43,000 square foot structure minimizes environmental impact through numerous energy-efficient and sustainable design features, including an 8,000 square foot green roof, use of recycled content and locally-produced building materials.

“We are extremely honored that our new facility, along with the efforts of Bulley & Andrews has been recognized to such a high degree by the Chicago Building Congress,” said Bruce Hegberg, assistant facilities engineering manager of S&C Electric Company.
