CHICAGO, IL (May 18, 2002) ) Bulley & Andrews (B&A) general contractors and Nagle Hartray Danker Kagan McKay (NHDKM) architects were proud to team up as house sponsors for Christmas In April 2002. The project, which benefited homes in the Chicago neighborhoods of Englewood, Greater Grand Crossing and south suburban Markham, is part of a national effort dedicated to helping homeowners who are limited in their ability to maintain their homes due to age, low-income, and/or disability.
On Saturday, April 27, 2002, a team of over 60 volunteers from B&A/NHDKM dedicated a day to helping improve one of these homes in Englewood. The properties included in the program were placed into three categories, light, medium or heavy, based on their need for skilled labor and level of repair. B&A/NHDKM chose a house that is home to an elderly couple raising four of their grandchildren and designated in need of heavy repairs. "As members of the building industry, we felt compelled to accept a greater challenge given this is our area of expertise. Our team’s experience and enthusiasm combined with generous donations from subcontractors and suppliers helped us make a sizeable impact on our homeowner’s residence and, ultimately, the family’s quality of life,” said Tim Puntillo, Bulley & Andrews’ project manager.
Months of coordination by Tim Puntillo and Michelle Sakayan, project co-captains, and the contributions of labor and materials allowed for the completion of several significant home improvements projects. Projects included a roof replacement, new front porch, fencing, kitchen renovation, interior painting, window replacements, electrical and plumbing work as well as landscaping. Together the team completed renovations totaling more than $70,000 in labor and materials.
“Our firms have enjoyed considerable success working together on building projects for private clients. We wanted to share that good fortune by doing something tangible for the community. Volunteering our building expertise, project management skills and manpower was the perfect way to make that happen,” commented Michelle Sakayan, Associate Principal at Nagle Hartray Danker Kagan McKay.
Generous donations of labor and materials by the following subcontractors and suppliers were critical to our project’s success: A. Gramer Painting, Block Electric, Clarence Davids Landscaping, Clark & Barlow, Commercial Carpet, Fettes, Love & Sieben, Hines Lumber, James Mansfield Roofing, Just-Rite Acoustic, Midwest Woodwork & Veneer, Shannon Lumber, and Wel-Built.
