SKOKIE, IL (September 24, 2007) Bulley & Andrews, LLC is completing construction of the new Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, Illinois. Dedicated to those who survived the Holocaust, as well as those who perished, the 65,000 SF center's goal is remembrance and education.
The Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center is a project of the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois. Founded by the area's Holocaust survivors more than 25 years ago, the organization is dedicated to teaching about the Holocaust and the dangers of unchallenged hate.
Designed by award-winning architects, Tigermann McCurry Architects, the building's three-part design is itself a tribute to Holocaust survivors. The first part is a dark anodized metal clad building representing "the descent into darkness." The "hinge" between the two sides represents a book of remembrance, and will be the memorial to those who perished in the Holocaust. The third part, made of white anodized metal, ascends into the light, representing hope, and will house an education center.
The facility's ground floor functions include a special exhibitions gallery, a children's exhibition, classrooms and special events hall. The main floor features an auditorium, the core exhibition, and a library and resource center. The second floor includes the Book of Rememberence, the Legacy of Absence Gallery and trustee's board room. Staff and administrative offices will be accommodated on the third floor.
The project broke ground in November 2006 and will achieve substantial completion in May 2008. Interior and exhibit space will then commence with a projected grand opening in November 2008.
The construction team for the project includes Timothy Puntillo, Project Executive; Patrick O'Bryan, Senior Project Manager; Scott Hartman, AIA, Project Manager; and Bruce Piecuch, Senior Superintendent. The architectural design firm is Tigermann McCurry Architects serviced by Stanely Tigermann, FAIA, Principal in Charge and Lisa Kulisek, AIA, Project Manager.
