Bulley and Andrews Through The Years:
1930-1939

Jones Laboratory, 1929-1930

Jones Laboratory was designed by Coolidge & Hodgdon.>

Bulley & Andrews used a forerunner of the modern day crane to lift the large structural stone members as the building grew in height.

Bernard Edward Sunny Gymnasium,1929-1930

Bernard Edward Sunny Gymnasium was designed by Armstrong Furst & Tilton. One of the first projects Bulley & Andrews constructed for the University, this masonry bearing building used steel girders as its roof support.

Men's Residence Halls, 1931

Men's Residence Halls, later re-named Burton-Judson Courts, were designed by Zantizinger, Borie & Medary. Barrett Sleeman, Superintendent, recalled that this was the last project where concrete was mixed on the job. A big, one-yard mixer was located down in a hole and was fed from a steel bin also located in the hole. The bin was divided into three sections containing sand, cement and gravel. A hoisting tower was then used to lift the material. The installation of 16"x16" valley rafters and over 1,200 doors were only some of the many challenges in completing the project. Barrett also built wooden centering forms for the stone doorways and arches to provide a temporary base for the stonework.

Eckhart Hall, 1930

Eckhart Hall was designed by Charles Z. Klauder and built by Bulley & Andrews in 1930. In his memoirs, Barrett Sleeman, Superintendent, recalled that this was the only project that he had the occasion to use trigonometry. In the basement a spectroscope mounting was built consisting of a tapered circle of concrete and a battered wall with a small opening for access to the machinery within. A light mounted on a pier at the center inside revolved very rapidly. It was in front of this building that Professor Michaelson discovered how to measure the speed of light.

The new building technique of curtain wall construction for both Eckhart Hall and the Men's Residence Halls proved to greatly increase the speed with which the stone buildings could be erected.

Laura Rockefeller Memorial Carillon, 1932

Laura Rockefeller Memorial Carillon was installed into the belfry at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel in 1932. Bulley & Andrews facilitated the installation of the bells with the creation of openings in the stone tower and other structural elements. The carillon's 18 1/2 ton bourdon, or bass bell, was installed along with 72 others encompassing 6 octaves. The total weight of the bronze is over 100 tons.
