Bulley and Andrews Through The Years:
1890-1899

Frederick Bulley

Frederick Bulley was born in Devonshire, England in 1870. He and his family moved to Canada two years later where he grew into manhood following the trade of stonemason. In the 1880's he relocated to Chicago and worked building chimneys. He soon formed a business relationship with Mr. Scoun, a house mover. Mr. Bulley would build a brick foundation under a house that had been raised on a timber structure and turning jacks by Mr. Scoun. This was common in Chicago during this time as street levels were being raised to accommodate the new sewer system.

Alfred Andrews

Fred Bulley met Alfred B. Andrews, an architect, while working on the same project in 1891. The two men realized their professions complimented each other and thus entered into a partnership that same year to form Bulley & Andrews. Mr. Andrews was a colorful character. For example, if someone asked Mr. Andrews a question at the jobsite, he would draw a sketch on the wall to explain. The workman then had to cut out that piece of the wall if he needed the sketch for reference.

Allan E. Bulley, Jr.

Allan Sr.’s son, Allan E. Bulley, Jr., was born in 1933. As a child he already had aspirations of being in the construction industry. In a school report this 13 year old stated, " I was called a depression baby because I was born in a depression. When I was only a few weeks old, I distinctly remember my father telling me to never become a builder because I would starve to death. My father is a builder! Today he talks about when I am old enough to enter the building business with him. How things change... Someday I will likely go into the building business and if I do, I hope I can live up to my father's record and be a success at it."
